Multiple people have died following a collision between a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat on the A66 in South Bank, near Middlesbrough in Teesside. Cleveland Police stated that the crash occurred at approximately 03:39 BST after a pursuit began when police sighted a suspicious vehicle.

The North East Ambulance Service deployed 14 ambulance resources to the scene, where officials confirmed that a number of patients died. A police spokesperson stated that authorities are currently working to identify the victims and contact their families following the fatalities.

The police watchdog has opened an investigation into the incident. Cleveland Police indicated that part of the A66 was expected to remain closed for the rest of Saturday as emergency services and investigators continued their work at the location.
