BODY: The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy was abruptly halted on Wednesday afternoon when the jury was sent home due to an unspecified unforeseen circumstance. Judge William Sullivan did not indicate the cause of the delay, telling jurors not to speculate about the matter or hold it against either side. Testimony in the Plymouth, Massachusetts, proceeding is scheduled to resume on Thursday morning.

Prior to the interruption, forensic psychologist Paul Zeizel testified for the defense that Clancy was not criminally responsible for the January 2023 killings of her three children. Zeizel told the court that Clancy suffered from bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis, leaving her unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions or conform her behavior to the rule of law. Clancy faces three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of her children in Duxbury, and has pleaded not guilty.

Clancy is accused of killing her 5-year-old daughter Cora, 3-year-old son Dawson, and infant son Callan before attempting to take her own life. Zeizel, who began seeing Clancy as a patient at a hospital after the deaths, stated that she thinks of her children every single day. The defense is seeking to prove that the rare mental illness led directly to the tragedy.
