Protesters in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand have called off their 26-day agitation following government agreement to several demands concerning alleged exam irregularities. Thousands of students and job seekers had sought an overhaul of the recruitment system, with some undertaking hunger strikes and camping in the state capital, Ranchi, since late July.

The breakthrough initially occurred after the state government cancelled 22 recruitment examinations based on CID and SIT investigation findings and ordered probes into others. Student leaders subsequently announced they had suspended the protest and granted the government a two-month window to fulfil remaining promises, while clearing the protest site after celebrations.

Uncertainty remains regarding the status of the concessions after the Jharkhand High Court reportedly stayed the state government's order cancelling the examinations, including the 11th and 13th JPSC exams and appointments. Protesters have warned that the suspended agitation could resume if the government fails to act.
