A manhunt is underway after a Tucson police recruit was shot dead and his fiancée was wounded inside their home early Wednesday morning. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department responded to the residence near Mountain Star Drive and Yedra Road just before 6 a.m. on August 19, discovering two people with gunshot wounds.

Carlos Ramirez, a 23-year-old Tucson Police Department recruit and former corrections officer, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 23-year-old fiancée, a current corrections officer, was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is listed in stable condition.

Authorities have obtained a first-degree murder arrest warrant for 33-year-old Alex James Barnett. Investigators are actively searching for Barnett and two other male suspects who remain on the loose following the deadly home invasion. According to court records, Barnett has a long and violent criminal history in Pima County and was released from prison in late 2025.
